Mr. Albert "Georgia Boy" Harris, former farm worker at Elsberry Farm in the mid 1940s. Mr. Harris lived on the farm with his wife (Josephine and their children; Robert, Abe, Alvin, Alberta, William, Nelson, Roosevelt and Randolph.) They lived in the area designated for Black workers called "The Quarters". Mr. Harris was the "Black Forman" the only black forman, Mr. Jones was the white forman. Ms. Inez Elizabeth Dolby a greatly revered community leader established schools for Blacks only. The schools were built in Adamsville, Sun City, Wimauma and Ruskin. This picture of Ms. Dolby was taken from a Tampa Tribune (Tampa Bay Life Section Sunday 6/8/2003) article, Ms. Dolby was 90 years old at the time. Ms. Dolby passed away at the blessed age of 96 and remains a stalwart figure as part of Ruskin area history. (Picture courtesy Alberta Harris)

My earliest remembrance was about five years, old living on Elsberry Quarters in Ruskin. My Mother's name was Josephine and my Daddy's name was Albert Harris but everyone called him "Georgia Boy". Early transportation in South Hillsborough County was difficult as there were few, barely passable roadways and pathways. Rivers often served as the primary transportation method. This is a 1910 photo of river transport along the Little Manatee River. Similar boats could be found on the Alafia River, as well.
